Why Business Development Is Often About Follow-Up, Not Finding More Leads

There is a particular phrase we hear a lot in business: 'I really must follow up with them.' This is usually followed several weeks later by: 'I still haven’t followed up with them.' (if you remember at all). And, in a nutshell, that is one of the reasons I started The BD Office.
The BD Office provides outsourced business development support for businesses across the UAE and UK that want to grow but don’t necessarily need a full-time BD person sitting in the office five days a week.
For many SMEs, founders and growing businesses, the problem isn’t a complete lack of opportunities. Often, there are plenty of them. They’re sitting in an inbox, a spreadsheet, a CRM, a pile of business cards, or somewhere in the back of someone’s mind after a really useful conversation at an event six months ago.
The tricky part is maintaining momentum while also running the actual business.
That’s where we come in.
The BD Office can help identify target organisations and decision-makers, research new markets, develop outreach, follow up leads and introductions, build referral relationships, support networking activity and bring some much-needed structure to the BD pipeline.
Sometimes that means looking for new opportunities. Just as often, it means working out which of the opportunities already there are actually worth pursuing.
Because business development doesn’t always need 50 new leads.
Sometimes it needs one good introduction, one thoughtful follow-up, one useful coffee and one conversation moved forward.
Clients can work with The BD Office through focused working sessions, where we get into the detail of their current BD activity, priorities, markets and next steps, or through ongoing retained support where we work as an extension of the business and actively help make those plans happen.
About the Founder:
The BD Office was founded by Wanausha Campbell, whose career has spanned sales, business development, market research, negotiation and international relationship-building across a wide range of sectors.
Her earlier commercial experience included travel and tourism, where she worked with international hotels and suppliers across markets including Spain, Portugal and the Caribbean, followed by business development in the technology and biometrics sector. More recently, she has worked in business development across professional and technical services, including leading Middle East business development for a fire and life safety engineering consultancy, developing relationships and opportunities across the UAE and wider region.
Having worked across different countries, cultures and sectors, much of Wanausha’s experience has centred on opening conversations, understanding markets, building commercial relationships and connecting the right people.
Alongside this, she is also a trained speech and language therapist. While that may appear to be an unusual combination, the two disciplines share many of the same skills: listening properly, asking good questions, adapting communication, understanding behaviour and building trust.
That blend of commercial experience and people-focused practice now shapes The BD Office’s approach: less hard sell, more understanding; less activity for activity’s sake, more focus on the relationships and opportunities most likely to go somewhere, and of course, remembering to follow up.
Focus. Connect. Grow.
