Why Your Network Is a Mirror

Why Your Network Is a Mirror

That's been my experience over the past few months. We've been going through a huge overhaul of our marketing processes at CMS, and the journey has taken me to more networking events than I can count. What's struck me most isn't the pitches or the business cards. It's the people.

Time and again, I've met people who think the way I think. Who value what I value. Who lead with honesty and humility before they lead with an agenda. It happens quickly, almost effortlessly, and it's tempting to just call it coincidence. But I don't think it is.

You Attract What You Already Are

There's an old idea, dressed up in different language across every culture, that we don't find our people by accident. We find them because we've become someone worth finding.

When I look back at the relationships that have shaped CMS, the ones that lasted, the ones that mattered, they all share the same quality. Not shared ambition. Not shared industry. Shared character. The people I trust most are the ones who show humility before they show credentials, and who tell me the truth even when it costs them something.

The reverse is true too. I've learned, sometimes the hard way, that when you compromise on your values to chase an opportunity, you tend to attract people who will do the same to you. Karma has a way of settling accounts.

Humility, to me, isn't something you perform in a boardroom. It's what you do when no one from that boardroom is watching. Most weeks, you'll find me buying drinks and snacks for the Starbucks staff, the car washers, the security guards, and the food delivery riders sitting outside waiting on their next order. None of them can do a single thing for my business. That's rather the point.

The Overhaul Was Never Just About Marketing

Rebuilding our marketing processes forced me out of the office and into rooms full of new faces. But somewhere along the way, the project became less about funnels and messaging and more about who we choose to walk alongside.

A brand isn't built by a strategy document. It's built by the people who represent it, and the people those people choose to associate with. If CMS stands for stability, ethics, and doing right by our clients, then every handshake at every event is either reinforcing that or quietly undermining it.

Three Things I'm Carrying Forward

  • Lead with humility, not proof. The people worth knowing don't need convincing of your worth. They recognise it because they live by the same standard.
  • Watch who gravitates toward you. Your network is often a more honest report card than any performance review.
  • Protect the circle. Not everyone who wants in deserves a seat. Guard your time and your values with the same discipline you'd guard your business.

In a perfect world, none of this would need saying. Good character would simply attract good character, every time, without effort. Maybe, in the rooms I've been walking into lately, it already does.

So I'll ask you the same question I've been asking myself: look at the five people you've spent the most time with this month. What does that say about who you're becoming?
