Optional Wellbeing Tools (Available Anytime)

Some Coping Tips:

  • Take a few slow, deep breaths when feeling anxious.
  • Limit exposure to distressing news if it feels overwhelming.
  • Reach out to friends, family, or support groups for connection.

Supporting Children (12 and Under) During Stressful Times

Children’s bodies respond automatically to loud or frightening events, their reactions are biological. Typical responses may include:

  • Clinginess or crying
  • Shaking or stomach aches
  • Irritability or regression (thumb-sucking, baby talk)
  • Repetitive questions (“I’m scared”)

These are normal stress responses. Your role is to help them feel safe and complete the stress cycle, not to stop the reaction immediately.

Quick Ways to Support Children

1. Co-Regulation

  • Stay calm: slow your breathing and speak softly.
  • Sit close and reassure: “Your body is reacting to the noise. We are safe here.”

2. Deep Pressure / Safety Signals

  • Hug, wrap in a blanket, or gentle hands-on shoulders for 10 seconds to help them feel contained.

3. Physical Activity to Release Stress

  • Push against a wall, stomp, or jump to help burn off adrenaline.

4. Playful Breathing Games

  • “Smell the flower… blow out the candle” — slow inhale and long exhale, repeated 3–5 times.

5. Give Them a Role

  • Assign simple tasks: flashlight checker, snack helper, blanket organizer. Feeling useful reduces fear.

6. After Loud Events

  • Calmly orient: “That was loud. We are safe. The sound has passed.”
  • Answer repeated questions with patience.

Things to Avoid

  • Sharing adult fears nearby
  • Overexposure to news or social media
  • Overpromising safety (“Nothing will happen”)

24–72 Hours After an Event

  • Extra clinginess, irritability, nightmares, or trouble sleeping are common.
  • Responses that help: maintain routines, offer physical reassurance, encourage drawing or storytelling, and limit media exposure.

A Gentle Reminder

Feeling anxious, unsettled, tearful, distracted, or on edge right now is a completely natural response to uncertainty. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do, protect you.
