An expert panel recently convened by the UK Government at the Arab Health Exhibition 2025 in Dubai emphasised the NHS journey of transformation and best practices in healthcare innovation.
The session, which gathered over 100 visitors from the trade show, was organised by the Department for Business and Trade, Healthcare UK and the NHS, with the support of the British Chamber of Commerce Dubai (BCCD).
Speakers included:
- Ged Byrne MBE, Director of Global Health at the NHS;
- Ayub Bhayat, Director of Data Services and Deputy Chief Data and Analytics Officer at the NHS;
- Matthew Trainer, Chief Executive Officer, Banking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals, NHS Trust,
- Chris Rockenback, Managing Director International and Commercial at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust;
- Mark Stoesz, President, Enterprise Solutions and Partnerships, International Markets, GE HealthCare;
- Dr. Ibraheem Elmogy, General Manager, Science & Technology, International Markets, GE HealthCare
- Michael Odling-Smee, Founder & Technical Director, Aire Logic.
A key focus of the conversation was the main obstacles preventing panellists from operating at full capacity to enhance healthcare in the UK.
Among the challenges discussed were capacity and capability constraints, a lack of customer insights, data management equity, and gaps in the talent pipeline. There was also a strong emphasis on the need for a more entrepreneurial mindset to drive efficient improvements.
Ayub Bhayat highlighted the importance of building patient trust in the use of their data for the greater good, ensuring equitable data management across the UK, and digitising all paper records to improve productivity.
Additionally, Dr. Ibraheem Elmogy noted that a significant number of UK physicians left the country during COVID-19, creating a gap in the talent pipeline emerging from medical education.
On the topic of sourcing challenges, Michael Odling-Smee shared concerns about the current fragmented procurement process, which causes obstacles and delays in NHS approvals and innovation.
