Food waste. Nothing says “Welcome home” to cockroaches, ants and other insects like food waste that’s been left out in the open. Wrap and store leftovers in the refrigerator or properly dispose of them to avoid unwanted guests.

Drains. We get it: When it comes to pipes it’s “out of sight, out of mind.” But what you can’t see could be offering a haven for pests. Transguard Living recommends that you keep drain traps closed (that’s the U-shaped part of the pipe) and clean your drains once every four months to avoid any build up in the system.

Windows. Ah, winter in the UAE: Beautiful blue skies, comfortable temperatures and mosquitoes. Keep those bloodsuckers outside by using flyscreens where possible and keeping windows closed before sunset (as this is when mosquitos are particularly active). Also, be sure to get rid of any stagnant water in your garden or on your balcony as it offers the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
