Countdown to COP28

This week we revealed Abu Dhabi's plans to launch the world's first carbon certification framework for hydrogen. The emirate's aim is to measure and accredit the carbon intensity of the hydrogen it produces and is the latest step being taken to develop and strengthen the UAE’s hydrogen industry.

It is a way of strengthening the regulatory framework for the industry and giving it greater credibility – not to mention being able to actually monitor and assess its climate change impact.

The long-term plan is for other countries to adopt the certification scheme, which would make Abu Dhabi a trailblazer in measuring hydrogen’s carbon intensity on an international scale.

The global hydrogen production market was worth $130 billion in 2021 and is projected to grow by 9.2 percent each year to 2030, according to the World Bank. If Abu Dhabi wants a sizeable slice of the pie, it needs to ensure the right systems are in place to make it a success.
