Reflecting on Progress: Menopause Awareness Day and the Workplace Transformation

Menopause Awareness Day is upon us once again, marking a year since I and the British Business Group Dubai and Northern Emirates (BBG) alongside a panel of influential speakers initiated one of the first panel events to address the topic of menopause in the workplace

This event served as a pioneering step in breaking the silence around a topic that was once considered taboo. It aimed to be a bold catalyst for change, empowering those in positions of influence to support menopause in the workplace. As we reflect on the journey one year down the line, it becomes evident that significant changes have taken place, primarily within international companies in Dubai.

Discussing menopause in the workplace was unthinkable just a few years ago. Menopause, often considered a private and personal matter, was shrouded in silence in the corporate world. The event hosted by BBG and the subsequent initiatives have broken these barriers, emphasizing the importance of addressing menopause support in the workplace openly and honestly.

As the UAE Menopause Coach and educator have, I seen a Positive Shift?

Over the past year, I am pleased to say I have witnessed a positive shift, especially within international companies, but there is still more that can be done. These organizations have taken the lead in acknowledging the significance of menopause awareness in the workplace.

This shift is a testament to the growing recognition that menopause impacts not only individual women but also the overall workplace environment.

It reflects the global trend that is rapidly gaining momentum as companies worldwide realize the importance of supporting and retaining their employees through this natural life transition.

One of the key factors contributing to the positive shift is the successful education and understanding of menopause in the workplace. As information and resources have become more readily available, there has been a remarkable increase in awareness among employees and employers.

Furthermore, the growing awareness has pushed menopause in the workplace to the top of policymaker agendas. It is no longer a matter to be brushed aside or ignored; it is recognized as a critical aspect of employee well-being and workplace inclusivity.

A holistic approach to organizational care has emerged, considering the full range of concerns of women experiencing menopause. This perspective not only benefits women but also extends its reach to support all individuals who may struggle with challenges in the workplace.

The ongoing transformation in workplace policies and attitudes towards menopause is indicative of the kind of organization and society we should aspire to become. An inclusive environment encourages women to utilize their talents and creativity without being burdened by the challenges of menopause. It recognizes the potential in all employees, regardless of their age and life stage.

Menopause Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the progress made in acknowledging and supporting women in the workplace as they navigate this natural life transition.

I am privileged to have played a pivotal role in catalyzing change. We've seen international companies, schools and universities in Dubai lead the way, breaking the silence surrounding menopause and implementing supportive policies.

In addition to supporting women and educating everyone, organizations have the opportunity to foster an environment where midlife women not only receive support during menopause but also feel empowered to pursue their ambitions and explore additional career opportunities. It's crucial to ensure that women do not perceive this natural life transition as something that weakens their position within the company. Nevertheless, as organizations prioritize providing visible support for women navigating this bodily transition, they must also address the potential risks of stigmatization. Stigmatization can inadvertently hinder women's career progress by leading to overlooked promotions, undervalued contributions, and missed opportunities.

The success of these initiatives can be attributed to the education and understanding that has permeated corporate culture. This positive shift in the perception of menopause will continue to make strides toward creating a workplace that values the diverse experiences of its employees. It's a testament to the power of open dialogue and inclusivity in shaping a brighter and more supportive and positive future for all in the workplace.
