UK Business Engagement Newsletter - The Road to COP28 – Edition 5
Date Posted:Thu, 28th Sep 2023
Time is flying and our Embassy teams are gearing up for what will be a momentous COP, opening exactly nine weeks from today.
I arrived at post earlier this month, taking up my two roles as His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan and His Majesty’s Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates. For both roles, COP28 is a top priority and HMG charging up, from the FCDO to DBT, and DESNZ to the Science and Innovation Network.
COP28 will include the first ever global stocktake of progress against the Paris Agreement, and the UAE's ambitions for COP are high. As are ours. Our COP26 legacy gave the world the tools required to keep 1.5C alive, and we want to support this year’s hosts to achieve real outcomes.
The Department for Business and Trade is well placed to support UK companies win business in the UAE and across the region. Countries in the Middle East and Pakistan are striving to meet their own climate goals, and UK innovation and solutions can support these ambitions. Just look at some of the brilliant UK companies active in the Middle East across the clean growth sectors. We are actively promoting UK capability to buyers in the Middle East and Pakistan. If you have a success story to share, we want to hear about it.

UK Pavilion
The UK has been allocated a great pavilion in the Mobility District in the blue zone. Watch this space to see the events programme for the Pavilion that will be live streamed. Here is a sneak peak of the building where we will be promoting the UK’s leadership on accelerating action on climate, energy, and net zero.

UK Net Zero
The PM announced pragmatic and more affordable changes to the UK’s approach to net zero last week alongside a continued commitment to net zero. The UK’s remains confident about meeting what are the most ambitious, stringent decarbonisation targets in the world and has cut emissions faster than any other G7 country, with that latest data showing that we’ve cut emissions by over 48%. The net zero changes will help UK business adapt to net zero and give them more time to build up supply chains.
