Providing healthcare in one of the most fragile environments in the world

South Sudan is the youngest country in the world, having gained his independence only in 2011. Since then, the country has suffered from internal armed conflict, resulting in more than 8 million people needing humanitarian assistance. The country also has one of the highest infant and child mortality rates in the world, and access to health services continues to be an issue due limited health personnel, inadequate health infrastructure and challenges with medical supply. This is exacerbated by frequent floods, which make 60% of the road network inaccessible during the rainy season.

Crown Agents, the international development organisation operating in 86 countries, works on reaching the most vulnerable in the country with essential medicines. Since 2012, the organisation has been the managing partner for the £450 million Health Pool Fund Programme, working with the Ministry of Health in South Sudan, Montrose International and 23 local partners, providing quality healthcare access in seven out of ten states in South Sudan. The programme is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, USAID, the European Union, the Government of Canada and the Government of Sweden.
To enable children’s access to life-saving vaccines, the Toyota Motor Cooperation recently donated one of his vehicles to the programme to assist the team on the ground in reaching even the most remote areas of the country.
