Top property maintenance tips for summer holidays away British Business Group

Summer times in the UAE often see families heading home for extended holidays, leaving their homes empty for longer than usual. Marie Moulds, sales manager for property maintenance services provider, mplus, shares her top tips to ensure your home is secure, well-maintained and protected during your time away.

1. Security: A secure home is a safe home. Before travelling, ensure your residence’s doors and windows are securely locked and reinforced if needed.
2. Plumbing: You can switch off your main water supply to prevent potential water leaks and damage. Drain plumbing systems by turning on faucets and flushing toilets to avoid stagnant water upon your return. Hiring a plumber to check all pipes for damage and potential cracks that could lead to avoidable damage is also advisable and can help you avoid returning home to an unpleasant surprise in the form of a high utilities bill. Make sure you don’t turn your water supply off if you have a garden to maintain. If you want to make sure costs aren’t mounting up, you can check your current usage on the DEWA app, helping you to keep an eye on things in your absence.
3. Electrical: Unplug unnecessary electronics and appliances to protect your property against power surges and reduce energy consumption during your time away. Turn sockets off where possible and leave only critical appliances like fridges and freezers plugged in while you are away.
4. Climate control: While you may be tempted to turn off your AC while you are away to save money, this could actually end up costing you more in the long run. Air in your home can actually become much hotter than outside temperatures, putting your appliances at risk and resulting in high levels of humidity, which can lead to mould and uninvited pests that thrive in warm, damp environments. Most AC units in the UAE have an automatic thermostat setting to help you maintain a stable indoor temperature. Adjust this setting to an energy-efficient temperature, such as 24 degrees Celsius, to return to a cooler home. Scheduling an AC service with qualified technicians before you travel will help your units run more efficiently while you are on holiday and in the summer.
5. Cleaning: Before you travel, clean out your refrigerator and dispose of any food that will expire while you are away. Ensure all bins are emptied and thoroughly clean your home to prevent pests. You can hire a company that provides deep cleaning to ensure your home is spotless before your travels.
6. Emergency contacts: Provide a key and access to your home to a neighbour, friend, co-worker or family member during your holiday. They will be available to contact you in case of an emergency and also be able to check on your property to ensure everything is in order.
