Why Leaders Can No Longer Ignore the Pause | By Nic Wagstaff, CEO at Inspire-Rewire

Dubai has become one of the world’s most dynamic business environments, a place where pace, ambition and reinvention converge. For British businesses operating in the UAE, this creates extraordinary opportunity but also extraordinary pressure. Leaders here are navigating a reality that is both exhilarating and exhausting, and today’s environment amplifies that further.
The Leadership Problem: Chronic Acceleration
Leaders in this region demonstrate exceptional resilience, but that resilience is increasingly being stretched to its limits. Across large organisations such as ADNOC, where I led leadership retreats, as well as small and medium UAE businesses and through my work with CIPD ME, one pattern is clear: leaders are operating in sustained overdrive. They are expected to deliver, innovate and transform at speed, yet the human nervous system was not designed for perpetual motion.
Global data reinforces this. Gallup reports that 44 percent of employees worldwide experience stress a lot of the day, and poor leadership increases burnout risk by up to three times. CIPD finds that poor management practices account for over half of work related stress cases, while McKinsey reports senior leaders spend 60 to 70 percent of their time in reactive mode. In a region where pace is a cultural norm, these statistics land even harder.
This is the leadership reality British business owners, corporate teams and individual leaders must navigate in Dubai.
Burnout Feels Personal, But Its Roots Are Systemic
Years ago, while leading large scale transformation programmes, I reached a point where I could no longer recognise the leader I had become. I was delivering, achieving and performing, yet internally I felt hollow. My confidence thinned. My emotional regulation disappeared. My identity felt brittle.
It was not tiredness or being busy. It had been building for much longer, the kind of erosion a good night’s sleep or a holiday cannot fix.
This experience shaped my Masters research in leadership burnout, where I found that burnout is fundamentally a psychological and neurological collapse. Leaders do not simply lose energy. They lose access to the parts of themselves that make leadership possible: clarity, emotional regulation, strategic thinking and grounded identity.
And when burnout reaches its full expression, leaders do not just slow down. They lose the ability to lead at all. No strategy, no resilience and no performance is possible when the nervous system has shut down.
The Pause Is a Strategic Intervention
This insight sits at the heart of my TEDx talk, The Power of the Pause, where I challenge the traditional definition of resilience. Resilience has long been framed as endurance, pushing through and carrying on. But in today’s leadership climate, resilience is not about holding more; it’s about knowing when to stop, reset and recalibrate.
“If you do not choose your pause, your body will choose it for you.”
After serving as Global Head of Learning and Development and running my own business for a decade, I have seen firsthand how quickly high performance can tip into depletion. I am a lifelong advocate for training, capability building and continuous learning. They are the backbone of leadership development. I also run powerful deep dive leadership and entrepreneurial sessions focused on self awareness and self leadership. But retreats hold a different kind of power. They create the conditions for leaders to access parts of themselves that training alone cannot reach.
They create space, silence and reflection that many leaders are craving.
Harvard research shows that chronic stress impairs executive function, leading to risk averse or impulsive decisions. Leaders cannot think strategically when their nervous system is in survival mode.
The pause is where identity resets, emotional regulation returns, decision quality improves, innovation becomes possible and leadership becomes intentional rather than reactive.
For British leaders operating in Dubai, the pause is no longer a wellbeing concept. It is a strategic capability.
Why Retreats Create the Edge for Leadership Development
Across more than ninety retreats delivered globally, one truth has become clear: certain transformations simply do not happen in a classroom.
Behavioural science research from Stanford and Yale shows that immersive experiences create two to three times higher retention than traditional training, identity level change requires environmental disruption and emotional regulation is learned more effectively through experiential practice.
Retreats deliver what traditional development cannot. They provide a full neurological and psychological reset that restores clarity, regulation and strategic capacity.
They create the conditions for deep reflection, emotional recalibration and behavioural change, the kind of shifts that influence how leaders show up long after the retreat ends.
For business owners, corporate teams and individual leaders, retreats offer a strategic interruption to patterns that cannot be shifted through conventional learning.
Dubai: The Ideal Environment for Leadership Reinvention
Dubai is uniquely suited to leadership retreats because it is a city built on deliberate reinvention, a place where leaders come to expand, accelerate and redefine their trajectory. But acceleration without regulation leads to burnout.
GCC leadership reports show increasing investment in sustainable leadership, resilience and wellbeing. The region is shifting from pace at all costs to pace with consciousness.
My work with UAE corporates and public wellbeing programmes shows that leaders here are ready for deeper interventions, not just training days.
A Strategic Retreat Approach for British Businesses
Retreats can be deployed strategically depending on the leadership challenge:
- Public Retreats for leaders seeking identity reset and clarity outside their organisational context
- Corporate Retreats for organisations requiring behavioural change, culture recalibration or senior team alignment
- Retreat Partnering for co designed models that meet specific organisational goals
Each pathway blends behavioural science, experiential learning and leadership psychology, grounded in two decades of Learning and Development, burnout research and the lived realities of leading in Dubai.
As Dubai continues shaping global leadership, the British businesses that thrive will be those whose leaders know how to pause, recalibrate and lead from a grounded identity. Retreats are no longer a luxury. And certainly not a holiday in that respect. They are purposeful pauses with grounded direction and intention. They are a strategic intervention for leaders navigating pace, pressure and reinvention, for real sustainability.
