One More Story Before School: Giselle Onanian Brings Alfie and Oak to The Roast by Bubbalicious

The UAE-based author joins Mina’s Kitchen for a live reading, a meet-and-greet, and a book signing, alongside The Ripe Market, a proper British roast, and an afternoon of creative play.

Before the school bags are packed and the weekday alarms return, The Roast by Bubbalicious is preparing to share one more story. On Sunday, 23 August, Mina’s Kitchen at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina will welcome The Ripe Market, the UAE-based author Giselle Onanian and the illustrated world of Alfie and his dog Oak for an afternoon of storytelling, book signing, creative play and a proper British roast.

At the heart of the afternoon are the Alfie & Oak stories, which meet children at moments of change— such as moving to a new country, feeling distant from loved ones, or experiencing a shift in a friendship. With Alfie and his loyal dog Oak beside them, young readers are tenderly reassured that it is all right to miss someone, worry, and ask questions. Told with warmth and reassurance, these books offer a comforting space for families to explore themes of change, connection, and farewell — themes that will deeply resonate with many families growing up in the UAE.

Throughout brunch, Giselle will bring Alfie & Oak’s adventures off the page through live readings and conversations with young guests. Children will have the chance to meet the author, ask questions and have their books signed, making storytime more personal and giving families a thoughtful way to ease into the new school term together.

The setting will draw inspiration from the books, featuring a gentle colour palette of sky blue, cream, and sunny yellow, accented with coral and Oak’s golden tan. A pastel balloon arch and a storybookthemed welcome will introduce a lively scene filled with book stacks, pencils, apples and alphabet blocks, carrying the back-to-school theme throughout the room. Character details inspired by Alfie & Oak will make younger readers feel as though they have stepped into the illustrations.

While the stories take centre stage, the menu will remain true to everything families return to The Roast by Bubbalicious for. Guests can expect carved meats, crisp Yorkshire puddings, golden roast potatoes, seasonal sides and rich gravy, followed by school-inspired dessert displays created with younger diners in mind.

Opposite the storytelling area, a dedicated children’s corner will offer Alfie & Oak colouring, bookmarkmaking, LEGO and Magna-Tiles. Little ones can also try slime-making, face painting, Jenga, or noughts and crosses. The Ripe Market will bring its signature community spirit to the experience, inviting guests to browse local brands, discover unique products, and support UAE-based businesses while enjoying The Roast’s relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
