Drowning Prevention Week (13–20 June)
Date Posted:Wed, 10th Jun 2026
Drowning Prevention Week (13–20 June), led by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, draws attention to drowning as a leading cause of preventable death worldwide, with the World Health Organization estimating around 300,000 fatalities annually.

Why this week matters
It is typically sudden and silent, often occurring without visible struggle and in surprisingly shallow water. The campaign focuses on improving understanding of water risk and reinforcing simple, practical behaviours that reduce the likelihood of drowning incidents.
Understanding the risk
Drowning can occur in many everyday environments, not just open water. In the UAE, young children—particularly those under 6—are most at risk. Incidents often occur in residential pools, hotel pools, beaches, and sometimes even in bathtubs or buckets when left unattended.
Drowning risks don’t disappear as children get older. According to the WHO, drowning is the third leading cause of death among children aged 5–14 worldwide, highlighting the importance of ongoing water safety education and swimming skills as children become more independent.
Simple habits that make a difference
Water safety doesn’t need to be complicated. It comes down to consistent behaviour.
Children should always be closely supervised around water—close enough to reach them immediately if needed. Even short distractions can be risky.
If someone falls into water, the natural instinct is to panic and fight the water. A vital survival skill is “Float to Live”: tilt your head back, relax your body, and focus on breathing while you regain control.
It’s also important to avoid unknown or unsupervised waters, such as rivers, wadis, lakes, or reservoirs where hidden hazards like sudden depth changes or cold-water shock can be dangerous. Warning signs should always be respected, and alcohol should never be mixed with swimming.
Turning awareness into action
While awareness weeks are important, real safety comes from practice and repetition. This is where structured water safety education makes a difference.
At Ocean Warriors Surf Life Saving Club Dubai, we focus on building these essential skills in a practical, supportive environment—helping children and adults become confident, aware, and capable in and around water. It’s also a great way to stay active, build fitness, and get away from screens. To support families during Drowning Prevention Week, we’re offering a free trial session so people can experience water safety learning first-hand.
A simple takeaway
Drowning prevention is built on small decisions: staying close, staying aware, and knowing what to do in an emergency. When these habits become routine, water becomes a much safer place for everyone.
