You Want to Visit Dubai. Here Is Why Insurance Should Not Be the Thing Stopping You | By Sonny Ridgewell, Director, Seven Insurance Brokers

We hear it every week. Someone wants to visit Dubai. A family member. A colleague. A client. They have looked at flights. They want to come. But there is a travel advisory in their home country, and they assume that means their insurance will not cover them. So they do not book.

That assumption is costing real trips. And for businesses in hospitality, tourism, and events, it is costing real revenue.

They are right about one thing. Standard travel insurance, bought at home before departure, may not cover a destination under a government travel advisory. The UK's FCDO, for example, explicitly states that travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against their advice. But that is not the end of the road. Visitor insurance is a different product entirely. It is purchased before you fly, directly from a UAE-regulated insurer, and it is not subject to the same home-country restrictions. Here is how it works.

What Visitor Insurance in the UAE Covers

Unlike travel insurance bought in your home country, visitor insurance is an inbound product. It is issued by UAE-regulated insurers and designed specifically for non-residents arriving into the country. Crucially, it must be purchased before you depart for the UAE — not after arrival. Most policies can be bought online in minutes before you leave. A travel advisory in the UK, US, or Australia does not affect its availability. A standard inbound visitor policy covers:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospital stays
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation
  • Accommodation costs if quarantine is required
  • Loss of travel documents

There is no excess on any medical claim. Cover starts from the day you arrive. As of 2026, visitor medical insurance is mandatory across all seven emirates, which means UAE-regulated products exist specifically for this purpose. The gap that most people assume exists simply does not.

What Determines What You Pay

Age

Age is the biggest factor. Premiums rise sharply for travellers over 60. Travellers over 70 can pay up to four times more than younger adults. This is actuarial pricing, not discrimination. If you are helping someone plan a trip, this is the number worth knowing upfront so there are no surprises.

Trip Length

Longer stays cost more. But the per-day rate is lower on longer policies. A 90-day policy will not cost three times a 30-day policy.

Coverage Level

A higher medical limit means a higher premium. Inbound visitor policies in the UAE market range from AED 150,000 up to AED 1,000,000 in medical cover. Choose coverage that reflects where you are going and what you are doing. Dubai has world-class hospitals. Treatment without insurance is expensive.

Pre-Existing Conditions

You must declare all pre-existing conditions. Failing to declare them does not save money. It invalidates the policy when you need it most. Some insurers exclude pre-existing conditions. Others will cover them with conditions. A broker can find the right fit.

Add-Ons

Planning to go dune bashing, skydiving, or scuba diving? Standard visitor policies do not cover adventure activities. Some insurers offer an Inbound Plus type plan that covers desert safaris, water sports, and similar activities as an optional add-on. If you or your visitors are planning activities beyond sightseeing, check the policy wording carefully before you buy.

Deductible

A higher deductible means a lower premium upfront. It also means a larger bill if something goes wrong. Adjust based on your budget and your risk.

What It Actually Costs

A client came to us recently. A family member had been putting off a visit to Dubai for weeks. They had seen the travel advisory. They assumed insurance was off the table. It was not. We arranged comprehensive inbound visitor cover before they flew. Emergency medical protection up to AED 150,000, medical evacuation, repatriation, and loss of travel documents. The cost was a fraction of what they had braced for. They booked their flights that evening.

Here is a real pricing example from one of our insurer partners, Orient Insurance:

These figures include 5% VAT. Note the senior band. A traveller aged 71 to 79 pays four times more than one under 70. That is the age factor in practice. It is still affordable. And it is still far less than the cost of a medical bill without cover in a UAE hospital.

One Thing Insurance Does Not Cover

Standard visitor insurance policies exclude injuries caused directly by war, conflict, or invasion. This is consistent with travel insurance exclusions globally, not unique to UAE products.

If a visitor is hurt by falling debris from a conflict-related event, that specific scenario is not covered. This is a standard exclusion across the market.

However, a sudden medical emergency, a heart attack, a fall, an accident, that occurs independently of any conflict is fully covered under emergency medical expenses. Provided it is not a pre-existing condition.

We share this not to discourage anyone from visiting. Dubai is open. The city is operating normally. We share it because honest advice is better than a nasty surprise at the point of claim. A broker will walk you through the exclusions of any specific policy before you buy.

It Is Not Just About the Visitor

Every visitor who books a trip is a customer for someone. A hotel room filled. A restaurant table taken. A tour booked. As visitor confidence returns to Dubai, businesses in hospitality, tourism, and events stand to benefit most. But with more guests comes more exposure. If you are running a business in the UAE, now is the time to make sure your own coverage reflects that.

  • Group medical: Are your teams covered as headcount changes?
  • Liability: If a guest is injured on your premises, are you protected?\
  • Employee benefits: The right package matters for keeping good people.

The right structure looks different for a boutique hotel than a large F&B operation. That is worth a conversation, not an off-the-shelf policy.
