Bridging Two Worlds: 16 Years of Evolving PR across the UK and the GCC | By Rosa Bullock, Founder and CEO of SOCIATE

Sixteen years ago, PR looked very different, but the goal was the same: build trust, shape perception, and tell the right story to the right audience. Since then, I’ve worked across both the UK and the GCC, with a focus on the UAE markets, and witnessed the industry's evolution firsthand, from the days of press clippings and faxed releases to digital-first storytelling and AI-assisted content creation.

A Timeline of Transformation

The evolution of PR over the last two decades is profound. In the UK, the emphasis was traditionally on securing coveted print placements, front-page features in legacy titles that could influence public opinion and business outcomes. These were markers of success.

But as the media landscape shifted, digital storytelling took centre stage. Campaigns needed to integrate earned, paid, and owned media, with real-time performance tracking and influencer collaborations being essential for success.

In the GCC, however, the transition took a slightly different form. While digital gained ground, traditional media, particularly in markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, retained a level of credibility and lifestyle integration that remained unparalleled. Here, a feature in a high-gloss magazine or national paper still holds weight.

The smartest brands understand one thing: PR is about striking a balance for maximum impact. “When used together, they deliver a story that’s both immediate and enduring.” — Rosa Bullock

The human element is what great PR is built on - knowing when to call instead of emailing, reading the room during a press briefing, and understanding the difference between tone and timing. These are still what makes or breaks a campaign, especially in the GCC, where personal relationships often open more doors than formal processes.

Cross-Cultural PR Is More Than Translation

Working across the UK and the GCC has taught me one of the most valuable lessons in my career: communication is deeply cultural. What resonates with an editor in London may fall flat in Dubai. Effective PR is about adapting stories to the local mindset without losing their essence. For UK brands entering the GCC and vice versa, this may mean revisiting their tone, localising visuals, or even shifting the entire message to align with regional values.

The SOCIATE Ethos: Evolution with Empathy

Founded in Dubai and powered by international perspectives, our team doesn’t just “do” PR - we live it across cultures, channels, and industries.

Whether launching a fashion brand, amplifying a lifestyle or hospitality campaign, or managing reputation through a crisis, we lead with empathy, embrace evolution, but never at the expense of connection. We see every campaign as an opportunity to connect humans while influencing outcomes.

From the cobblestone streets of London to the towering skyscrapers of Dubai, my journey in public relations has taught me that true influence is first built on trust then comes trends or technology.

And trust takes time. It takes consistency. It takes a story worth sharing, and that’s the evolution I’ve come to embrace.
