Shaping the Picture of Health in a Dynamic Global Landscape by Reimagining Health, Access, and Innovation for a Rapidly Changing World | By Dr. Mohammad Maan, Regional Head of Clinical Operations, Bupa Global Middle East, Africa, Europe, and US

Global healthcare expenditure continues its steep upward trajectory. The Lancet projects a rise from $9.21 trillion in 2014 to $24.24 trillion by 2040 *, yet many of the systems behind it remain inconsistent, fragmented, and reactive. For globally mobile individuals and the organisations that support them, healthcare must be more anticipatory, intelligent, and responsive.

At Bupa Global, we believe it's time to rethink how care is delivered. Picture of Health is our strategic framework for enabling a future where care is smarter, earlier, and engineered around people's lives, supported by our international clinical infrastructure and digitally enabled platforms.

"The future of healthcare isn't just about treating illness it's about understanding people's lives, anticipating their needs, and delivering care that fits seamlessly into their everyday. That's the vision behind Picture of Health."

Redefining health in a changing world

What defines good health in 2025 depends on context. Some people prioritise fast access. Others value long-term prevention. Many need both and more.

Backed by insights from our global customer-house clinical experts, Picture of Health is tailored to meet those diverse needs. We're designing care journeys that bridge gaps across borders and life stages powered by data, delivered through connected systems, and adapted to local realities.

This work reflects broader shifts across international private medical insurance. From higher claims complexity and medical inflation to rising expectations around transparency and efficiency - our goal is not to add more layers, but to remove friction and deliver consistent, accountable results.

Our focus: Scale, innovation, and value

  • Clinical growth: Our cross-market medical network enables consistent care standards, clinical governance, and outcome tracking across borders.
  • Innovation with impact: Through genome sequencing pilots in the UK, we've identified actionable risk markers in 15% of participants , giving customers the power to act before conditions escalate.
  • Value through simplicity: We're enhancing direct settlement networks and streamlining claims workflows creating a system where faster access leads to better outcomes and measurable efficiencies for employers.

Integrated pathways for better outcomes

We're rolling out integrated care pathways in the UK for cancer, mental health, and musculoskeletal conditions in partnership with Cromwell Hospital and Bupa Clinics.

These structured journeys include:

  • Diagnostics within 48 hours
  • Specialist consultations in under five working days
  • Pre-approved, coordinated treatment planning

In the Netherlands, where whole genome sequencing is already used in clinical settings, pilots have shown that 22% of patients with actionable gene findings were offered additional treatment options based on their sequencing results

Blending digital access with clinical oversight

With Blua by Bupa, we combine international reach with on-demand virtual care. Members gain access to telehealth, personalised wellness plans, and home-based diagnostics and prescriptions. 7.5 million customers are now using Blua across Bupa’s major markets, and in 2024 alone, Blua facilitated over 6.5 million telehealth consultations, supported by a network of 16,700+ clinicians

In Australia, a ten-month trial of Blua's online doctors, results showed:

Crucially, Blua isn't just about convenience - it's about delivering continuous, connected care supported by real-time data and local follow through.

A blueprint for resilient, personalised care

Picture of Health is more than a concept. It's Bupa Global's commitment to building a healthcare experience that anticipates, adapts, and empowers.

By aligning predictive tools, integrated pathways, and cross-border delivery systems, we're shaping a future where healthcare not only protects, but propels. Designed to support globally mobile populations and their evolving needs, this model doesn't just move with the individual - it moves health forward.
