Medical Insurance Update: UAE's Mandatory Health Insurance for Private Sector Employees

It has recently been announced that, starting January 1, 2025, the UAE will implement a mandatory health insurance scheme for all private sector employees and domestic workers, ensuring that healthcare costs are more manageable for residents.

 What’s Changing?

The UAE government has introduced a rule mandating medical insurance for all residents, aiming to alleviate concerns about medical expenses.

How does this differ from now?

Currently only Abu Dhabi and Dubai employers are required to provide medical insurance although many see it as good practice to provide it and certain licensing authorities demand it it’s not a definitive requirement across the emirates.

 Who Must Have Insurance?

All Residents: This includes employees, the self-employed, and dependents.

Both Expatriates and Nationals: Everyone must comply with this rule.

What are the Key Benefits?

Guaranteed Healthcare Access: Ensures coverage for doctor visits and treatments.

Financial Safety Net: Helps cover medical expenses for both employees and employers. Many employers provide financial support incase of emergency or other medical situations which would be covered by the insurance.

Broad Coverage: Includes regular check-ups and emergency treatments meaning that healthcare is more accessible to those covered ensuring they get timely treatment.

Implementation Details:

Employers’ Responsibility: Companies must provide compliant insurance plans for their employees.

Self-Employed and Dependents: Must arrange their own insurance to meet regulations.

Compliance: Essential to avoid penalties and ensure continuous coverage.

Full details have not yet been released but I would expect them to be available towards the end of the year.

My recommendation to companies that are not currently providing medical insurance to their teams is to get ahead of the curve, reach out to trusted insurance brokers to investigate the costs that maybe associated with the new policy to ensure that you can budget accordingly and either start coverage before the deadline or ensure you have the funds available to cover the insurance from January 2025.
